“Santjie!”
“Ja, Mamma?”
“Santjie, wil jy saam winkel toe gaan?”
“Asseblief, Mamma! Ek trek net gou my skoolklere uit!”
“Yes, Mommy?”
“Santjie, do you want to come with me to the shops?”
“Please, Mommy! I will just quickly take off my school clothes!”
A little while later she sits bolt upright beside her mommy on the way to town. They find a nice parking spot under a big shady tree.

Hand in hand they walk through the town and look in wonder at all the pretty things in the shop windows. They have only a few things on Mommy’s little list, but it is always fun to look around.

“Mamma, kyk dáár!” roep Santjie opgewonde. “O, is dit nie mooi nie?”
Mamma draai haar kop. “Wat sien jy, my hartjie?”
“Oh, isn’t it pretty?”
Mommy turns her head. “What do you see, my sweetheart?”
“That umbrella with all the colours in the window! It is like a rainbow!”
Mommy looks at the colourful umbrella for a moment. It really is beautiful, but they do not really have money for such things. And what will Santjie do with an umbrella now?

Ons moet nog die kruideniersware koop.”“Mommy,” says Santjie, “the man at Sunday school told us about an umbrella and what the colours mean!”
Mommy sees the excitement in her little daughter’s eyes. “Right, my treasure, I will buy it for you. But you must tell me nicely what those colours mean.”
“I will, I promise!” says Santjie. “But can I start already?”
“No, wait until we are home. We still have to buy the groceries.”
After their shopping they go and drink coffee and eat chocolate cake at a new small little restaurant.

Before they drive home, they first go and sit together for a little while on a bench in the park, and chat about this and that. Santjie holds her umbrella tightly; she cannot wait to tell everything.

At home she helps eagerly to unpack the shopping.

Nou kan jy my alles vertel.”When they are finished, Mommy brings two glasses of cold lemon juice and says: “Come, let us go and sit on the couch. Now you can tell me everything.”

Ons word sopnat en alles gaan verkeerd.”Santjie starts off with her story.
“Did Mommy know that Jesus’ grace is like an umbrella? Every day we walk with Him under His big umbrella of grace. He protects us, just like He cares for the little birds every day.”
“But if we move out from under Jesus’ umbrella, then we have BIG problems. Then we are alone.
It is like when it rains and we have forgotten the umbrella at home. We get soaking wet and everything goes wrong.”

Mamma knik. “Dis baie waar, my kind.
“That is very true, my child.
But why did you want the umbrella so much?”
“It is easy, Mommy. The man at Sunday school says every colour has a meaning in the Bible.
Jesus did not make colours for nothing!” It always makes me think of the rainbow, after a nice shower of rain…
Santjie picks up her umbrella and starts to show:

Mamma glimlag. “Dis pragtig, my kind. Maar daar’s nog meer kleure...”
“Moenie bekommer nie, Mamma, ek onthou!” sê Santjie opgewonde.
“PERS beteken ons is konings en priesters in diens van Jesus.“BLACK means that our heart is still full of sin and we do not yet live with Jesus under His umbrella.
RED is the colour of Jesus’ blood when He died on the cross, for all our sins and sicknesses.
GREEN means we have received new life and we now choose to walk with Jesus.
WHITE shows that we are now clean and pure in Jesus’ eyes.
GOLD means God is busy purifying us, like gold in an oven. He wants us to be pure. That is when we learn not to tell lies. Or not to take other people’s things, like Bennie who stole Kosie’s money.”
Mommy smiles. “That is beautiful, my child. But there are more colours…”
“Do not worry, Mommy, I remember!” says Santjie excitedly.
“PURPLE means we are kings and priests in the service of Jesus.

GEEL is fees!
Mamma glimlag breed. “Dis wonderlik, Santjie. Jy het mooi geluister.”YELLOW is a celebration! It is the joy in our hearts for everything that Jesus has done for us.
There are many more colours,” she says, “but these are the ones I can remember now.”
Mommy smiles broadly. “That is wonderful, Santjie. You listened well.”

Santjie vou haar sambreel oop. “Mamma, dis nie net ’n gewone sambreel nie. Dit is Jesus se sambreel — en onder dit is ek veilig.”Santjie opens up her umbrella. “Mommy, this is not just an ordinary umbrella. It is Jesus’ umbrella, and under it I am safe.”
Op die regte tyd is daar altyd ’n antwoord!“When we give our hearts to Jesus, He protects us! We never have to be afraid of anything!”
At the right time there is always an answer!
